Artist Statement:
This painting was born from a deeply personal moment in my life—the news that I would be moving away. I was leaving behind my friends, a familiar neighborhood, and a school community I loved, heading into the unknown. The thought of not sharing middle school with the friends I had grown up with made me reflect on all the laughter, games, art projects, and endless conversations we shared.
I wasn’t ready to let go of those memories. The right side of the painting reflects the emotions I experienced during the move. The girl’s eyes are filled with worry, echoing my own fears: Would I find new friends? Could I ever see my old ones again?
At the center, the girl’s wide eyes symbolize wonder—a blend of hope and curiosity that emerged as I settled into my new environment. While still holding on to nostalgia, I also began to embrace the unknown.
On the far left, a second face in profile looks forward. This figure represents the future— unformed and mysterious, yet full of possibility. It’s a space for dreams and imagination, guiding me forward along my personal Pathways to Wonder.
